Mounting Olympic Umbrellas

Posted on  by kulichik
The Olympic National Sports Complex in Kiev, Ukraine is about to be completed. Flying struts or ‘umbrellas’ that are being mounted and form an essential part of the open shed prove that the construction undergoes its final stage.

The ‘umbrellas’ ensure membrane stretching, supply the membrane with wavy structure to avoid accumulation of snow at the same place, produce natural lighting of the field due to transparent dome and finally carry out an architectural function making the dome look unusual. The strut in the picture is totally assembled.
The dome of the strut is covered with a transparent ETFE film.
All 640 struts were assembled in May and June.
That’s what a suspended strut looked like.
The membrane is not stretched yet and the struts are not fixed.
This strut with all the robes on it looks like a huge jellyfish.
Only minimum work is carried out in the air and not much time is needed for that.
Robe ends are fixed on the inferior radial wires.
Robe stretching is regulated with a special screw.
The strut is held in the correct position with the help of temporary robes.
First robes are fixed on wires elevating the strut in the projected position. But later temporary ropes were widely used.
Some struts are located outside the tribune.
Now let’s see what the stadium looks like at night.
